Craft Closets

Maybe you're one of those people who hate crafts or maybe you like them but just don't feel like you have the skills to make it worth your time.  If you're one of those then maybe this post isn't for you.  But if you're like me, you enjoy dabbling in a craft or two but hate the mess that comes along with it.  For scrapbooking you have paper, scissors, cutters, stamps, ink pads, glues, sometimes even plug in machines to do special cuts or embossing!  With jewelry making you have many different beads, wires, string, ribbons,  and tools.  Sewers have a sewing machine, yards or material, thread, needles, buttons, zippers...you get the idea.  Being crafty comes with a lot of stuff!

Many people don't have the space to devote an entire room to their crafts. One ends up having boxes and bins stashed around the house with different craft supplies.  Below are some tips for creating a craft corner or craft closet to help you get organized in the new year.  Enjoy!

Design Tip: If you dabble in several types of crafts, devise a versatile storage system that can change as you do. Go vertical in your craft closet with slat wall storage and bulletin boards, or invest in canvas or see-through containers that are easy to rearrange and carry around.

Design Tip: Give yourself easy access to supplies. Open storage puts ribbons, scissors and paints within reach and right where you want them. You might never run out of glue, but you will have to dust more often.

Design Tip:  Make the most of a seldom used space. Put an existing closet to use as a super organized location for all your supplies.  Or use an old wardrobe or armoir to stash all your stuff.  Be sure to utilize every inch of space including the doors and the high shelves.

Design Tip:  Don't forget the kids!  With miles of markers and crayons, it's easy to become overwhelmed with kid-friendly craft items.  Keep everything withing reach of little hands, clearly label everything either with letters or pictures, and make items easy to see so they are more likely to get put back in the proper place.

Design Tip:  If you don't have space to convert an entire room over to a craft room, make a mini-craft room out of your closet space.  And while your at it, incorporate your favorite colors, decorate it, and make it a space you'll want to spend time in.

Now go out there and have fun crafting!  We'll leave the craft ideas up to you.
