Night Trains Season comes to the dozens of model railroad layouts in a magical way, the lights are turned down, the buildings and street lights glow warmly, setting the scene for specially lighted models of vintage passenger trains. A couple of familiar faces will walk the catwalk including Minneapolis city council member Jacob Frey and elite runner Heather Kampf while Fulton pours pints all night long. Visitors to this year’s Mpls.St.Paul Magazine ASID MN Showcase Home will be transported to a place with sandy beaches, lapping waves and salty air, without leaving the city limits of Minneapolis.

Lovers of the sand and sea, homeowners Mark and Susan Lacek decided on a “coastal-chic” theme for their new home, and worked with a team of 27 certified American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) to transform their 1920s Tudor near Lake Harriet to a beach-style retreat. The Showcase Home, presented by Cambria, opened for viewing on September 19.  This will be the last weekend it is available for viewing.

The tour is run completely by volunteers and free of charge to participate or attend.  The event will be self-guided with the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society providing a list of sites. This is a great opportunity for you to see renewable energy in action and talk to owners with real-life experiences living sustainably.

In this very special evening of entertainment, the renowned Martin Zellar features some of his favorite songs by Neil Diamond and showcases his songwriting talent playing fan favorites from the Gear Daddies and Martin Zellar catalogs.

Martin Zellar rose from the ashes of the legendary Gear Daddies, the Midwest-based country-rock band led by the singer-songwriter. The Gear Daddies formed in 1985. A rabid fan-base soon developed and the band dished out two releases on major label Polygram, “Let’s Go Scare Al” (1988) and “Billy’s Live Bait” (1990). Critics gushed about the band’s “gutsy, country-tinged songs filled with heartland angst” as the group spawned a string of tunes about lost souls, drunken nights and unrequited love. The group even appeared on “Late Night, with David Letterman.” Zellar also wrote the world-wide novelty tune “The Zamboni Song” which has appeared on the soundtracks of many movies, including “The Mighty Ducks” and “Miracle.”

In 1992, much to the chagrin of the band’s now nationwide following, Gear Daddies amicably disbanded, leaving a mark on the Minneapolis music scene that continues to this day. Zellar went on to release several solo records and perform with his band,The Hardways, across the Midwest and the country, opening for such acts as The Eagles and Idina Menzel. Although he is first and foremost held in high regard by fans and critics alike as original singer and songwriter, Zellar also openly acknowledges and honors his musical influences, including Neil Diamond, timeless songwriter and entertainer.

Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery is bringing their pop-up pub half-way across the country and setting up shop in the heart of Downtown Minneapolis.

The 402-foot custom bar will be home to about 20 bartenders who will be pouring beer from 40 taps from their best sellers to rare beers typically reserved for their home base.

And although this party is put on by a brewery, it is an all-ages affair. You can listen and dance to lots of live music from Big Wu, Solid Gold, Step Rockets and BBGun. And if you get hungry, worry not. While chefs from Twin Cities favorites, Red Cow and Republic, are creating some dishes especially for the day, you’ll also find food from Happy Gnome, Potters Pasties, The Bison Butler and Cranky’s Ice Cream to purchase on site.

Twin cities music, craft brews and local BBQ join together for a fourth year to build community and make a difference in the Northwest Suburbs!

This one day event is headlined by local legend, The Lamont Cranston Band, and will also feature fellow Twin Cities acts: Soultight Committee, Jacy Pelstring, and The Lisa Wenger Band.

Lamont Cranston Band: Minneapolis blues legends famous for the “Upper Mississippi Shakedown”, multiple Critics Choice and Reader’s Choice award winners for best “Best Twin Cities Blues Band” in City Page, and inductees to the Mid-America Music Hall of Fame.

SoulTight Committee: Exciting ten piece band bringing old school soul and R&B to the stage. Multiple Minnesota Music Awards nominees, 2001 “Best Cover Band” winner, and noted by Rolling Stone as "Godfathers (and Mothers!) of Soul ."

Jacy Pelstring: Performer/songwriter out of Plymouth with powerful edge-of-your-seat vocals, frontwoman stage presence, and soulful delivery beyond her years.

Lisa Wenger Band: Staple of the Minneapolis/St. Paul music scene, sweet & gritty vocals, and sets ranging from blues classics to contemporary soul and New Orleans R&B.

Kid friendly activities will be available from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. that include face painters, balloon artist, magician, and Home Depot workshop.

Craft beer and wine from 612 Brew, Insight Brewing, Third Street Brewhouse and Winehaven will be available for purchase, as well as BBQ from Mr. Pig Stuff, Chuck Wagon, and Von Hansons.

Back for its third year, the MN Landscape Arboretum’s Art Crawl Through the Gardens is a showcase of art and nature. Instead of tent upon tent, artists are nestled amongst the Arboretum’s beautiful landscapes and gardens. Guests are encouraged to take a stroll through the beauty of nature via the Arboretum’s 3-Mile Drive (also accessible by car and the Arboretum's free, hop-on, hop-off Circulator) and enjoy handcrafted items from local artists.

Meet Shawn McCann, multi-media artist who will be creating a chalk artscape on the Dahlberg Terrace, Saturday only. He will be starting by 8 a.m. or earlier. Watch his chalk illustration come to life throughout the day.

For 49 years, the Minnesota Vikings have come to Greater Mankato for training camp. Join in the excitement as fans attend practices and scrimmages at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Blakeslee Field. The festive Vikings Village includes a Vikings Autograph Zone, a Kids Zone, delicious food along with regular and adult beverages.  Kids can attend free football and cheerleading clinics.  Saturday, August 1st, stick around for team introductions and a fireworks show.

Leave it to Minneapolis to come up with this idea: a bike ride focused around tacos. That’s right, at 3:00 pm folks will gather at Gold Medal Park, ready for a casual bicycle ride and plenty of tacos. The route is not yet firmed up, but you can bet there will be plenty of corn and flour tortillas to be had.

Everyone is welcome…as is cash for those places on the tour that don’t take plastic. Simply show up and prepare yourself for bikes, tacos and awesomeness.

Lincoln:  The Constitution And The Civil War

"Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War" is a travelling exhibit that illuminates how President Abraham Lincoln’s leadership and constitutional vision steered the nation through its most turbulent years and into a future that forever changed America. The exhibit explores how Lincoln used the Constitution to confront three intertwined crises of the war: the secession of Southern states, slavery, and wartime civil liberties. Visitors will leave the exhibition with a more complete understanding of Lincoln as president and the Civil War as the nation’s gravest constitutional crisis.

The exhibit is organized into six main exhibit areas: “Secession Winter,” “Oath of Office,” “Crisis of Secession,” “Crisis of Slavery,” “Crisis of Civil Liberties,” and “Lincoln’s Legacy: The Gettysburg Address in His Time and Ours.”

This exhibition is sponsored by Lincoln Financial Group.

The traveling panel show of "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War" was developed by the National Constitution Center, in collaboration with the American Library Association.

The traveling exhibition is made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Yes folks, the Tour de Fat will once again be meandering through Minneapolis spreading the good word about the positive societal offerings of the bicycle. This is the biggest, most enjoyable TRAVELING BIKE FESTIVAL that we know of. And entrance is FREE!

What is the Tour de Fat you ask? It's a day of connecting people with bikes, beer, and community, while having a good ol' time. And everyone is welcome! This is a family-friendly event that involves costumes, bikes, and a parade that you (and your bike) can participate in!

The Bike Parade begins at 10 a.m. from Loring Park, but be there early to register. And be sure to stick around after the parade for performances by great local musicians.

Proceeds from Tour de Fat benefit Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, Midtown Greenway Coalition and Minnesota Off-Road Cycling Advocates.
