The Excelsior-Lake Minnetonka Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the 2nd Annual “Big Island and Back” 10k Nordic Ski race on Saturday, February 8 at 2pm. Proceeds from the race entry fees will be donated to the ICA Food Shelf program. The start line is at the dock area in Excelsior Bay. Come early and have lunch in Excelsior. Stay after for drinks and dinner.
Incoming Chamber President, Bill Damberg explains that an intrepid group of Nordic enthusiasts staged an inaugural race last year, and the participants “knew it could become a great event”, so approached the Chamber about sponsorship. “A race on Lake Minnetonka will be flat, fast and fun” according to Damberg, who was also one of the original organizing members of a similar annual race called Book Across the Bay in Ashland, WI, and which is now the 2nd largest Nordic ski event in North America.
This year’s race will be capped at 400 registrations, with plans to grow the event each year. Our goal is to get skiers of all ages out on Minnetonka for a great community winter event. The course will be groomed and tracked for both Classic and Skate skiers.
A post-race party will take place at Excelsior Brewing along with music by Wondercure.
Online registration for skiing will close at midnight on Friday, Feb. 7.
You can also check them out on Facebook.
